Dartmouth is renowned as a holiday centre and is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with superb scenery, blue-flag beaches and the magnificent River Dart with the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway running along the river bank.

 

 

A major tourist attraction to historic Dartmouth is the Britannia Royal Naval College situated on a hill above Coronation Park.

The college was built in 1902 and has been a training establishment since 1905.

This magnificent building is set 127 acres of land.

Organised Group Tours are welcomed throughout the year.

General Public Tours operate from Easter to the end of October subject to Royal Navy operations.

 

 

 

 

The Royal Avenue Gardens (pictured here) are a focal point of the town, holding Music Festivals, Fetes and other organised events during the summer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the head of Dart Estuary you'll find the magnificent defensive fortifications of Dartmouth Castle, an English Heritage site.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Foss Street is a pedestrianised precinct with many small specialist shops and cafes.

These continue across Duke Street into Anzac Street, towards St Saviour's church.

Just off Foss Street is the Old Market, an unusual building opened in 1828. Markets are held here on Fridays and Tuesdays. Shops in the Old Market are open all year and throughout the week.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The River Dart is one of the most spectacular estuaries in the British Isles, in terms of scenic beauty, natural wildlife and also historic interest.

RiverLink offer pleasure boat cruises on the River Dart or coastal cruises to Torbay or Salcombe.

RiverLink also offer a Round Robin experience. This is a unique circular tour offering sight-seeing trips by pleasure boat, steam railway, ferry and bus.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The area abounds with superb blue flag beaches, one of the very best being Blackpool Sands which is 3 miles down the coast. The water is clean and clear, with the beach being cleaned daily.

Water sport equipment is available to hire.

 

Slapton Sands, Salcombe and East Portlemouth are also close by.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Little Cotton is the ideal spot for exploring the beauty and history of the South Hams. The towns are steeped in history; you'll find shopping a refreshing experience; art and antiques to locally produced food and crafts.

 

The town of Totnes with its Castle and Elizabethan Market (every Tuesday in the summer) is half an hours drive away.

 

Kingsbridge, Salcombe and numerous coastal villages are all within easy reach.

 

For a taste of the more boisterous life the delights and attractions of Torbay are just up the coast.

Paignton and Torquay offer amusements and entertainment galore for all the family including theatre, shows and funfairs.

 

So you can choose between a leisurely stroll through the old town's narrow streets, shopping and browsing around the market, a trip on the river, a nostalgic ride into the past on a steam train, sampling the good country food in pubs and restaurants or just lazing the day away on the beach.
